Nokubonga Mthethwa turned a mother’s moment into an events brand

Sometimes the most meaningful businesses begin with a simple act of love.

For entrepreneur Nokubonga Mthethwa, that moment arrived in 2014 while planning her son’s first birthday party, an occasion that would unknowingly launch her into the world of event planning.

At the time, Mthethwa was unemployed but determined to create a celebration that her family would remember.

With limited resources but plenty of creativity, she took on every aspect of the event herself, from décor and food preparation to organising the full setup. What began as a heartfelt effort to mark an important milestone quickly revealed something more.

The party was a success, and guests noticed.

Friends and family were impressed not only by the beautiful setting but by Mthethwa’s ability to coordinate the details seamlessly.

Before long, she found herself being asked to organise other gatherings, birthdays, family celebrations and special occasions. What started as helping loved ones soon evolved into something bigger.

“I realised that the love I have for planning and putting things together could actually turn into something bigger,” Mthethwa says.

Today, at 39, Mthethwa runs a full-service events company offering décor, floral arrangements, catering, event planning, equipment hire and photography.

The business prides itself on being a one-stop solution for clients, simplifying the often complex process of organising a memorable event by bringing multiple services together under one roof.

Her approach blends creativity with careful attention to detail, qualities she says were deeply influenced by her late mother.

“My mother loved bringing people together through food and warmth,” Mthethwa reflects. “Watching her create those moments inspired my appreciation for creating memorable experiences for others.”

That sense of hospitality and connection has become central to her brand. Over the years, her dedication has earned her a loyal and growing client base, with both families and businesses trusting her to bring their visions to life.

One of her proudest milestones came in 2024, when she was selected to plan and execute the fifth birthday celebration for the popular South African sneaker brand Drip Footwear, a project that highlighted how far her business had grown since those early days of organising family gatherings.

Like many modern entrepreneurs, Mthethwa has also embraced digital platforms to expand her reach. Through Facebook, Instagram and TikTok, she showcases her work, connects with clients and offers a glimpse into the creativity behind each event she brings to life.

The next chapter in her journey is already underway. In May, she plans to host her first annual wedding expo in the Alberton area, bringing together a range of wedding service providers under one roof. The event will offer couples an opportunity to explore ideas, meet vendors and plan their big day in a single, curated space.

For Mthethwa, the expo represents another step forward in a journey that began with a single birthday celebration.

“What started as planning a small family event has grown into something that allows me to create beautiful memories for others,” she says.

Mthethwa’s rise from intimate family celebrations to high-profile events is marked by moments that test her creativity and calm under pressure. One such instance was a massive book signing event, where she was handed the task of designing and delivering the décor with less than 24 hours’ notice. “It was a high-stakes setting,” recalls event organiser Khensani Magubela.

“The guest list included captains of industry, senior government officials, and even former presidents. Nokubonga read the brief like a master storyteller, understood exactly what the occasion demanded, and brought it to life. Her team moved like a well-oiled machine, and before we knew it, the space was transformed into an event that could have easily graced a five-star magazine spread.”
