Viral post claiming student received R630 434 from NSFAS is fake, says scheme

The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) has moved to debunk claims circulating on social media that a student received a payment of R630 434.44 from the Scheme, describing the post as false and misleading.

According to NSFAS, preliminary verification shows that the image being shared online is manipulated, appears to be AI-generated, and does not correspond with any legitimate NSFAS transaction. “No such payment has been made by NSFAS,” the Scheme confirmed.

NSFAS further explained that the student allegedly behind the content appears to have created it for social media purposes, likely seeking traction for content creation opportunities on various platforms.

The Scheme clarified that it does not make large lump-sum payments directly to students.

“Funding allocations are paid directly to universities, which then administer approved student allowances in accordance with established funding guidelines. These systems are governed by strict financial controls and oversight mechanisms,” NSFAS said.

The organisation assured students, institutions, and the public that its systems remain secure and that no irregular payment or breach is associated with the claim.

NSFAS also warned that the creation and circulation of false or misleading information is taken seriously. “NSAS reserves the right to pursue appropriate legal action against individuals who deliberately create or distribute misinformation that harms the reputation and integrity of the Scheme,” said the organisation.

Members of the public are urged to rely only on official NSFAS communication channels for verified information.
