South African drivers are facing one of the country’s biggest fuel price hikes today, as escalating conflict in the Middle East disrupts oil supply and global prices soar. Brent crude has surged past $105 per barrel this month, with peaks even higher.

Locally, the Central Energy Fund reports massive under-recoveries. Petrol prices have increased by R4.50 - R5.76 per litre, and diesel by R7.50 - R10 per litre, pushing 95-octane petrol toward R25 - R26 per litre and diesel close to R28 per litre in some areas. Analysts warn that if disruptions persist, further increases could follow in May. Combined with a weaker rand and a 21-cent-per-litre tax increase, households already under pressure from load-shedding and rising living costs face added strain.

In this environment, motorists are increasingly considering hybrids as a hedge against fuel volatility.

The Benefits of Hybrids

Hybrids combine a petrol engine with electric assistance, offering improved fuel efficiency (often 30–50% better than equivalent petrol models on mixed driving), lower emissions, no range anxiety thanks to the backup petrol engine, and the ability to run on electric power for daily commutes. Popular hybrid models in South Africa include the Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid, Honda Fit Hybrid, Suzuki Grand Vitara Hybrid, and Haval H6 Hybrid.

“No option is perfect, and drivers should weigh their own circumstances,” the story notes. Hybrids excel in fuel economy without full dependence on charging, are versatile for city and highway driving, produce lower emissions, and generally cost less than full EVs. However, they still use some petrol, have slightly more complex maintenance than traditional cars, and cost a bit more upfront.

Traditional petrol or diesel cars remain attractive for their lower purchase price, widespread refuelling options, and familiar servicing, but are fully exposed to volatile fuel costs, higher long-term running expenses, and greater environmental impact.

Expert Advice

“More than ever before, the global picture is making pre-owned hybrids the intelligent choice for South African families and commuters,” said Errol Levin, CEO of Weelee. “The ongoing conflict has sent fuel prices soaring, and analysts warn of sustained volatility ahead. Drivers who switch now can protect themselves from these unpredictable spikes while enjoying better fuel economy and far fewer trips to the workshop.”
