Pikitup warns job seekers after scammers demand R500 for fake general worker positions

Pikitup, the waste management entity of the City of Johannesburg, is warning job seekers that its vacancies are not for sale after reports emerged of scammers demanding payment for general worker positions.

The entity says individuals posing as Pikitup employees are offering jobs in exchange for payments of R500 or more, using information from a legitimate job advertisement published earlier this year.

It strongly condemned the fraudulent activity and urged members of the public to remain vigilant.

“Under no circumstances should anyone pay money to secure a job opportunity,” the entity said. “Pikitup does not charge any fees for job applications or appointments.”

According to the entity, scammers are recycling content from a legitimate February advertisement for general worker posts to mislead unsuspecting applicants and solicit payments.

“The scammers are reportedly using content from a legitimate job advertisement published in February this year, where Pikitup advertised general worker positions, to mislead unsuspecting applicants and solicit payment,” the entity said.

Pikitup reiterated that all recruitment processes are free and warned job seekers not to make payments in exchange for employment.

“Members of the public are strongly advised not to make any payments in exchange for employment. Those unsure about the legitimacy of a job offer are encouraged to verify the information by contacting Pikitup’s call centre.”

The entity urged anyone who may have fallen victim to the scam to report the matter to authorities.

“The entity also urges anyone who may have fallen victim to this scam to report the matter and open a case with the South African Police Service,” it added.
