For Grade 12 learners across South Africa, the matric dance remains one of the most anticipated milestones, marking the end of their school journey before final exams and the transition into adulthood.

But as the cost of living continues to rise, the price of celebrating the occasion is placing growing pressure on families.

Matric dances have evolved into increasingly extravagant events, with expenses ranging from designer outfits and luxury cars to professional styling and photography. The added influence of social media has further fuelled expectations, leaving many households feeling compelled to spend beyond their means.

According to Tina Manyanya, spokesperson for short-term lender Wonga, some families are spending upwards of R30 000 on the occasion, often without planning for it in advance.

“We understand how important this moment is for families,” she said. “But it shouldn’t come at the cost of financial stress afterwards. With a bit of planning, it’s possible to celebrate and stay in control of your finances.”

Manyanya said the current economic climate makes it even more important for families to approach matric dance spending carefully, warning that financial strain can quickly build without proper planning.

She encouraged families to start by setting a clear and realistic budget before making any decisions.

Before any decisions are made, agree on what you can realistically afford. Setting a budget upfront helps manage expectations and gives both parent and child a clear sense of what’s possible. It’s also an opportunity to introduce an important life skill: understanding how to plan and prioritise spending.

She also advised families to think beyond the event when making purchases, suggesting that items chosen should offer value beyond a single evening.

“A good purchase shouldn’t only work for one evening,” says Manyanya. “If it can be used again, it becomes far more worthwhile”

Renting outfits, she said, can also be a practical and cost-effective option for learners who are unlikely to wear formal attire again.

For outfits that are unlikely to be worn again, renting can be a smart alternative. It allows learners to enjoy the look and feel of something special without the long-term cost. It’s also a more practical and sustainable option for one-off occasions.

Transport is another area where costs can quickly escalate, but Manyanya said simple alternatives can help reduce expenses.

Arriving in style doesn’t have to mean hiring an expensive car. Sharing transport with friends or booking a ride service in advance can significantly reduce costs, without taking away from the experience.

She added that planning ahead is key to avoiding unnecessary expenses.

The earlier you book, the more control you have over pricing and availability. Waiting until the last minute often means paying a premium or settling for limited options. Planning ahead not only saves money but also reduces unnecessary stress in the lead-up to the event.

“Moments like these matter, and they should be enjoyed,” Manyanya concludes. “But staying in control of your finances matters just as much. With the right approach, you don’t have to choose between the two.”
