Footprints 4 Sam has unveiled an upgraded kangaroo mother care (KMC) ward at Rahima Moosa Mother & Child Hospital, aimed at improving comfort and dignity for mothers caring for premature and vulnerable newborns.

The launch coincides with April, Sam’s birthday month, which the Trust says is a time of reflection and a tribute to his legacy through meaningful support for families navigating difficult medical journeys.

Melissa Williams Platt, Sam’s mother and co-founder of the Trust, said the upgrades were inspired by the compassion and support her family experienced during Sam’s treatment.

“During Sam’s medical journey, we came to understand just how much warmth, dignity and human kindness matter when your world is filled with fear and uncertainty… When your child is fighting, even the smallest comfort can give you strength to face another day,” she said.

The ward, originally upgraded five years ago, has now received additional improvements including secure lockers for mothers, an upgraded kitchen for long-term stays, redesigned staff workspaces and refreshed bathroom facilities.

The Trust said the enhancements aim to create a more practical and supportive environment for mothers who often spend weeks or months in the ward caring for their babies.

Kangaroo mother care is a skin-to-skin method used for premature babies, helping regulate body temperature, reduce infection risk and strengthen bonding between mother and child.

Footprints 4 Sam also funds monthly 24/7 Wi-Fi access in the ward, allowing mothers to stay connected with family, continue studies and access support while largely isolated due to the vulnerability of their babies.

The organisation said the initiative forms part of its broader mission to support children with chronic or life-limiting illnesses, their families and healthcare workers through improved care spaces and compassionate support.
