Her daughter, media personality Nonhle Thema, shared the news on social media, confirming her mother’s passing and paying tribute to her life and legacy.

In a statement, the family said: “With profound sadness, the family of Cynthia Shange shares the news of her passing at the age of 76. Shange, a legendary figure in South African arts and culture, left an indelible mark as both a beauty queen and a revered actress.”

Shange passed away in the early hours of today in a hospital in KwaZulu-Natal after battling an undisclosed illness.

A pioneer in South African entertainment, Shange rose to prominence in the 1970s after being crowned Miss Africa South during the era of segregated pageantry. She went on to represent South Africa at Miss World in 1972 in London, where she achieved a top five placement.

Her acting career made her a household name, particularly through her acclaimed role in the isiZulu television drama Udeliwe. She also appeared as “Mkabi” in the mini-series Shaka Zulu and featured in several television productions throughout the 1990s. In later years, she continued to appear on screen in the SABC2 soapie Muvhango, earning admiration across generations.

The family added: “She was a trailblazer in the South African entertainment industry, rising to prominence in the 1970s… Her exceptional contributions were recognised with a Lifetime Achievement Award from the South African Film and Television Awards (Saftas) and the Simon Mabhunu Sabela TV and Film Awards.”

Shange is survived by her daughters Sile and Nonhle, sons Ayanda and Benele Thema, as well as her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

“She will be remembered not only for her talent, but for the path she paved for generations of South African artists,” the family said.
