Mrs South Africa 1st Princess Talitha Oosthuizen has launched a campaign aimed at collecting and donating 1,000 evening dresses to matric girls across Gauteng who cannot afford to attend their matric dance.
The initiative comes amid rising costs linked to matric dances, which can reportedly reach up to R30,000 when including dresses, make-up, styling, transport, and pre-event celebrations, a financial burden that continues to exclude many learners from the milestone event.
Oosthuizen says the campaign is aimed at restoring dignity and inclusion for young women at a critical stage of their schooling journey.
“This is about dignity, confidence, and showing young girls that their dreams are valid, regardless of their circumstances. Every girl deserves to feel beautiful and celebrated during this milestone moment.”
The public is being urged to donate new or pre-loved evening gowns, which will be redistributed to selected matric learners. Donations can be dropped off at Bush Whisper Expeditions in Benoni, with the campaign running until 15 June 2026.
Beyond donations, the initiative will also host curated dress selection and fitting experiences on Youth Day (16 June) and Women’s Day (9 August), where recipients will be assisted in choosing gowns and preparing for their matric dances.
“This is more than charity - it’s about restoring hope and celebrating potential,” Oosthuizen said.
“We want each girl to walk into her matric dance knowing she belongs there.”
Learners who wish to be considered can WhatsApp their name and school to 082 377 0085. Organisers say demand is expected to be high, and early applications are encouraged.
The campaign forms part of Oosthuizen’s broader work within Mrs South Africa, focusing on youth upliftment and empowerment through practical, community-driven initiatives.
