A search for a five-year-old child has ended tragically after she was found floating in a river in Makonde village, Shadani, in Thohoyandou.

Police in Limpopo have confirmed the discovery of the body of Nndwaasiyashu Tambani (5), who was reported missing on Saturday, 02 May 2026, at around 13:00.

It is alleged that the child’s mother was at home when the child, who had been asleep in another room, went missing. A search operation was immediately launched involving SAPS Thohoyandou, EMS Search and Rescue teams, the SAPS Water Wing, and community members.

The child was later found floating in the Mutale River. The body was recovered and handed over to police.

Limpopo Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe has expressed sadness over the incident.

“We are deeply saddened by this tragic loss of a young life. We wish to convey our sincere condolences to the family and loved ones of the child during this difficult time,” she said.

She also urged parents and guardians to remain vigilant during Child Protection Week.

“As we honour Child Protection Week, I would like to urge parents and guardians to never lose sight of the little ones,” she said.

Police say investigations are continuing.
