A police officer is among those arrested in connection with an ATM bombing in Dinokana, near Zeerust, following an intelligence-driven operation that escalated into a deadly shootout.

Five suspects were taken into custody after law enforcement tracked the group to Magogae Village in Mmabatho. The operation turned violent when suspects allegedly opened fire, leading to a confrontation with police in which three suspects were fatally wounded.

Authorities say the arrests mark a significant development in the investigation into the early-morning ATM bombing, with the alleged involvement of a serving police officer raising serious concerns.

Major General (Dr) Ryno Naidoo has welcomed the arrests, commending the swift and coordinated response by multiple specialised units.

He also strongly condemned the alleged role of the police officer.

“The actions of any member of the SAPS who engages in criminality are a betrayal of the oath to serve and protect. Such conduct will not be tolerated, and those found on the wrong side of the law will face the full might of the law,” said Naidoo.

The operation brought together several units, including the National Intervention Unit, Tactical Response Team, K9 units, detectives, crime scene management teams, and emergency services.

The suspects are expected to appear in court on charges including ATM bombing, possession of explosives, and related offences.

Police say investigations are ongoing, with further suspects still being pursued.
