In a striking celebration of Africa Month, Gautrain has partnered with internationally acclaimed South African designer David Tlale to transform the everyday commute into something extraordinary.
As part of Gautrain’s evolving Art in Transit initiative, stations and train carriages have been reimagined as a moving runway for Tlale’s latest Autumn/Winter 2026 collection, themed “I Am Africa, Not African.”
The collaboration marks a first for South African public transport, blending fashion, culture, and movement in a bold display of African creativity.
On 6 May, unsuspecting commuters were treated to a surprise fashion experience as models draped in Tlale’s designs moved seamlessly through Gautrain stations and train carriages, turning ordinary travel into an immersive celebration of style, identity, and artistic expression.
The activation served as a preview of an exclusive showcase held on 8 May, where guests witnessed the official unveiling of Tlale’s Autumn/Winter 2026/27 collection, set against the sleek, modern backdrop of the Gautrain.
More than just a fashion moment, the collaboration positions Gautrain as a cultural destination, one that champions African heritage, contemporary design, and creative innovation.
Gautrain Management Agency CEO Tshepo Kgobe described the partnership as a reflection of Africa Month’s deeper significance, highlighting the power of identity, shared heritage, and artistic excellence.
“Africa Month reminds us of the power of identity, creativity, and shared heritage. Through Art in Transit, we are creating spaces that reflect the energy, diversity, and innovation of South Africa. Our partnership with David Tlale demonstrates how public spaces can become platforms for artistic excellence and cultural expression, transforming everyday journeys into memorable experiences.”
For Tlale, the runway on rails represents a vision long in the making.
“To launch the “I am Africa, not African” Autumn/Winter 2026 collection on the Gautrain has long been a dream rooted in a shared vision of excellence, innovation, and national pride. Today, that vision becomes reality.”
Tlale added, “This collaboration is a celebration of two brands that embody ambition and possibility. A moment that reminds us of the beauty, resilience, and world-class standard of South Africa. This Autumn/Winter 2026 collection promises to be a true mover and shaper of art, redefining how we experience fashion in public space.”
Through Art in Transit, Gautrain continues to redefine public space, transforming stations, trains, and buses into vibrant cultural canvases where fashion, art, and everyday life beautifully intersect.
