Madlanga Commission zeroes in on missing drugs and alleged thefts within law enforcement

The Madlanga Commission is set to intensify its investigation into seized drugs that have allegedly been stolen or gone missing from law enforcement custody.

In a statement shared by Jeremy Michaels, spokesperson for the commission, the inquiry confirmed that this week’s hearings will continue to focus on drug seizures by South African law enforcement agencies, as well as the handling and disappearance of narcotic substances in KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng.

Michaels said the upcoming proceedings build on testimony heard last week, including in-camera evidence from Witness H, presented on Friday.

“This is the last week of public hearings before the Commission breaks from 18 May 2026 to focus on its second Interim Report,” Michaels said.

The report is expected to be delivered to President Cyril Ramaphosa on 29 May 2026, marking another key step in the commission’s probe into criminality, political interference and corruption within South Africa’s criminal justice system.

With growing questions over what happens to confiscated narcotics once they enter official custody, this week’s hearings could expose deeper failures within the country’s justice and law enforcement structures.
