The Khayelitsha Netball Sub District recently celebrated a successful completion of the under-19 netball tournament held at Khayelitsha Stadium over the weekend.
The tournament showcased the best of local talent, bringing together six teams from across the area in a spirited display of athleticism and teamwork.
Emerging as champions were the Shooting Stars, who won four out of their five matches. Their victory not only earned them the title but also secured their place in the next stage of the competition, the regional games hosted by Cape Town Netball Federation.
They will now compete against some of the top teams from the city, vying for a spot in the provincial games. Their win dethroned last year winners, Simunye, who had to settle for the runners-up spot.
Bathandwa Mayiji, the tournament coordinator, highlighted the event's importance for the young girls of Khayelitsha, who are in dire need of more opportunities for competitive sport.
He said the tournament provides young athletes with a platform to showcase their skills, build confidence, and aspire to be great in their sporting career.
Mayiji has been relentless in his efforts to elevate the profile of netball in Khayelitsha.
He has been working tirelessly to forge partnerships with other sporting codes in the area, aiming to draw much needed attention and resources to the sport.
Joining Shooting stars and Simunye in the tournament was also Trevor, Mighty Rovers, Young Stars and Future Stars.
Looking ahead, the focus now shifts to Shooting Stars for their upcoming challenges at the regional level where they will be hoping to ruffle a few feathers for a chance to reach the provincial games.
