The Hollywoodbets Sharks showcased resilience and determination as they edged out the Emirates Lions in a fiercely contested Vodacom United Rugby Championship (URC) derby in Durban on Saturday.

Their 25-22 victory not only solidified their fourth-place standing on the log but also secured them the SA Shield for the first time in their history.

Springbok scrumhalf Jaden Hendrikse proved to be the hero of the match, slotting a crucial penalty goal with just five minutes remaining. This vital kick handed the KwaZulu-Natal outfit an invaluable bonus-point victory after they led 12-7 at halftime.

The win propelled the Sharks to 39 log points, closing the gap on the third-placed Vodacom Bulls (41). With six regular-season matches remaining, the race for play-off spots is intensifying.

A Historic Triumph

As if avenging their 38-14 defeat to the Lions in Johannesburg last week was not motivation enough, the Sharks’ victory also meant that they dethroned the Bulls as SA Shield holders. This latest silverware adds to their growing collection, which already includes the Carling Currie Cup and the EPCR Challenge Cup.

The match was a thrilling contest from the outset, with both teams displaying attacking intent. The Sharks dominated possession and territory in the first half, yet the Lions remained competitive with counter-attacking breaks that kept them within reach.

Early Action Sets the Tone

Grant Williams opened the scoring for the Sharks with an explosive run, weaving through defenders to dot down. However, the Lions responded swiftly, with Tapiwa Mafura crossing over minutes later. A successful conversion pushed the visitors into a 7-5 lead within the opening eight minutes.

Despite creating multiple try-scoring opportunities, the Sharks struggled to convert them into points. However, just before the break, Springbok captain Siya Kolisi powered over the line, securing a 12-7 lead for the home side.

Kolisi’s influence continued into the second half, as he bagged his brace in the 46th minute, extending the Durbanites’ lead. The Lions, however, refused to back down. Braving the stifling heat, they clawed their way back with tries from Richard Kriel and Franco Marais, coupled with a penalty goal from Gianni Lombard, to seize a 22-17 advantage after 64 minutes.

Late Drama Seals the Victory

With momentum swinging back and forth, the Sharks needed a response. Their forward pack stepped up, laying the platform for Nick Hatton’s crucial try in the 69th minute, levelling the scores at 22-22.

The tension escalated when Yaw Penxe received a yellow card in the 70th minute, reducing the hosts to 14 men for the remainder of the match. Despite the numerical disadvantage, the Sharks continued to apply pressure. Their efforts paid off when Hendrikse’s penalty kick ricocheted off the uprights before bouncing through to give his side a decisive three-point lead.

With neither team able to add further points, the  Sharks held on to claim a significant victory. This result keeps them firmly in the top four, where all teams have now played 12 matches.

Play-off Race Heats Up

The Lions remain in eighth place with 29 points, level with ninth-placed Connacht. The DHL Stormers, currently in 12th place with 28 points, are locked in a tight mid-table battle with Scarlets (10th), Ospreys (11th), and Benetton (13th), all on the same tally.

Interestingly, only eight log points separate Munster in fifth (33 points) and Zebre Parma in 15th (25 points), setting the stage for an exhilarating final stretch in the competition as teams vie for playoff positions.

With their newfound momentum and the SA Shield in their grasp, the Sharks will now shift their focus to the remainder of the Vodacom URC season as they aim for a strong finish and a deep play-off run.
