At one stage, replacing the colossus Duane Vermeulen as Springboks No 8 seemed like a near-impossible task with the contribution he made to the national side.

However, Jasper Wiese has made that role his own in recent seasons and currently plays a vital role in the Bok pack and gameplan. When he was suspended last season, there were a couple of hiccups in his absence. But since his return, several local players have also put their hand up for Springboks minutes ahead of the 2027 Rugby World Cup.

No 8 is a position the world champions have plenty of talent in ahead of a blockbuster 2026 international season.

Evan Roos (Stormers)

The versatile No 8 put his hand up recently with some strong performances for the Stormers since returning from an injury. He’s been the driving force of the Cape side’s power game, especially early in the season as they remained unbeaten until January this year. He will be a strong contender to add to his Springboks caps this season.

Jeandré Rudolph (Bulls)

What a season the veteran is having, and he keeps delivering for the Pretoria side. Rudolph is an ever-present player and has a never-say-die attitude. At times, he almost single-handedly kept the Bulls in the game, especially in that derby against the Stormers. Age might not be on his side, but that’s never stopped the Boks from selecting in-form players.

Francke Horn (Lions)

Another player who is pulling his weight big time for his team, despite the mixed results they are achieving. Horn leads with his massive carries and defensive work rate, but he can also play as a link between the backs and forwards. His leadership capabilities also bring another dimension to his game.

Nick Hatton (Sharks)

The 23-year-old eighthman has been flourishing with some experienced campaigners around him at the Sharks. Head coach JP Pietersen challenged him to raise his game to their level, and Hatton responded in kind. He wasn’t overwhelmed playing alongside Springboks at his young age, and that quality will go a long way.

Jasper Wiese (Urayasu D-Rocks, Japan)

He is still the benchmark when it comes to South African No 8s, and it will take a lot to lift the dynamic player out of the cushions. His abrasiveness and no regard for his own health see him putting his body on the line weekly for the Boks. Wiese should be a regular starter this season, looking at the Tests against England and the All Blacks.
