Siba Mahashe delivered a standout forward performance as the Lions clinched the United Rugby Championship SA Shield with a stirring derby victory over the Stormers at Ellis Park on Saturday.

If silverware is often forged in sacrifice, the statistics from this contest painted a vivid picture of the Lions’ resolve. They were forced to make a staggering 137 tackles to the Stormers’ 56, underlining just how much defensive pressure they absorbed – particularly after being reduced to 14 and then 13 men.

Even more telling was the battle on the floor, where the Lions won nine turnovers to the Stormers’ one.

At the heart of that effort was Mahashe. The dynamic flank set the tone early, crashing over for the opening try to ignite the home crowd and give the Lions invaluable momentum.

It was a reward for his sharp instincts and relentless support play, qualities that have come to the fore in back-to-back derbies. But it was his work without the ball that truly defined the night.

As the Stormers poured forward in the final quarter, Mahashe’s engine never faltered. He chopped down ball-carriers, bounced to his feet to compete at the breakdown and repeatedly folded into the defensive line as the Lions scrambled to protect their lead.

His decision-making – knowing when to go low and when to slow possession – was crucial in disrupting rhythm and buying precious seconds. He was the game’s top tackler with 18 hits.

Coach Ivan van Rooyen praised the flank’s “unbelievable engine” and high repeated efforts, noting the healthy competition that has strengthened the Lions’ loose-forward armoury this season.

This was Mahashe’s second standout derby in succession after a strong try-scoring URC debut against the Sharks, and it confirmed his growing stature in a side that has matured mentally. Where previous campaigns saw the Lions fall agonisingly short in local clashes, this time they found a way to close it out.

The numbers – 137 tackles, nine turnovers – speak of grit and collective buy-in. The shield speaks of progress. And Mahashe was at the centre of it all.
