Loosehead prop Gerhard Steenekamp will run out at Loftus Versfeld on Saturday with more than just another game ahead of him.

The Bulls star will earn his 100th cap for the team across all competitions — a milestone that reflects his dedication and rise over the past few seasons. But, he’s not alone in celebrating the occasion, with a handful of teammates bagging their own personal achievements.

However, there is a bigger picture at play against Munster in Pretoria (2pm kick-off).

The clash carries plenty of weight in terms of the United Rugby Championship (URC) log and the Bulls’ position in the Top 8. A victory will keep them there; a loss could knock them out of the playoff spots.

While head coach Johan Ackermann made some tactical changes to the side for the clash, he is under no illusions that they remain under massive pressure.

“Every game is important. We’re just unfortunately in that situation now,” the coach said with his team announcement.

“We will fight to stay in the Top 8 with every game. If we don’t get the result, we’ll put ourselves in jeopardy. If we get it, we stay in touch. So, every game is vital. If Munster win, they go up. If they don’t, it doesn’t matter.

“We just have to keep winning.”

It’s a message that feels grounded rather than dramatic — and it shows in the way Ackermann approached his team selection. There’s no panic, just the plan to stick to what has been working.

Up front, the tight five remains largely unchanged, and they must provide a reliable platform for scrumhalf Embrose Papier and flyhalf Handré Pollard to manage the game and keep the scoreboard ticking over. A couple of Ireland internationals strengthened Munster, so the expectation is that they will deliver a much-improved performance from last weekend, where they lost 45-0 in Durban.

The backline adjustments Ackermann made hint at a more tactical mindshift and what they expect from the Irish club at altitude.

Willie le Roux is back at fullback after some games off the bench, and his experience, especially under the high ball, will be crucial. The Bulls can expect some high and long kicks from scrumhalf Craig Casey and flyhalf Jack Crowley.

That is where Kurt-Lee Arendse and Canan Moodie, who shift to the wing in place of Cheswill Jooste, will also be crucial. Harold Vorster’s return at inside centre adds a bit of steel in midfield — something they’ll need against Munster’s physical defence.

Arendse, Marco van Staden and Cameron Hanekom will bring up 50 games for the Bulls, while hooker Johan Grobbelaar sits one try away from a remarkable 50 for the franchise.

“They’ll be highly motivated, and we expect them to come out with intensity and determination. If you look at the team, regardless of the result against the Sharks, Munster is one of the most consistent teams in the URC, and in Europe, so I think they’ll come to set things right.”
