Following their impressive 2–0 win over Stellenbosch FC on Sunday, Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Brandon Petersen has urged his teammates to maintain consistency as they prepare for their first home fixture of the season against Polokwane City on Wednesday (7.30pm kick-off) at FNB Stadium.
Petersen, who played a pivotal role in the win by keeping a clean sheet despite sustained pressure from Stellies throughout the match, was pleased with his side’s performance and hopes they can build on it as the campaign progresses.
“It was a good start to the season for us, "Petersen told the media on Tuesday.
“Great victory against Stellenbosch — we always enjoy playing them. It's always a tough game, and I thought that we applied ourselves quite well.”
The experienced goalkeeper, who has re-established himself as the club’s No 1 after limited minutes last season, is encouraged by the sense of unity and focus in the squad.
“The main target was to start the season well and come back with three points, and we achieved that. We’re doing well as a unit. This season, you can see the hunger, the fight, the togetherness,” he added.
Chiefs struggled to find rhythm and consistency during the last campaign—something Petersen hopes they’ve now put behind them.
“The main concern from last season was consistency. Now, it's about building on this. The schedule is packed, and it’s a blessing that we’re playing tomorrow again. It’s important for us to keep the momentum going.”
Part of that momentum has come from fresh energy in the squad. The 30-year-old shot-stopper praised the early impact of new signings like Thabiso Monyane, along with development graduate Aiden McCarthy, who have both made strong starts to life with the first team.
“The new guys have all raised their hands — you can see they’re here to fight for a place and make their mark. I’m looking forward to seeing how we grow as a team, and looking forward to the encounter (on Wednesday).”
