Andile Mpisane has skipped training with Mbabane Highlanders AM FC in order to record a new album.
According to reports, the DJ, rapper and former Royal AM midfielder has been away all week, and no one at the club owned by his mother, Durban businesswoman Shauwn Mkhize, knows when he will be back with the team.
"Andile is back in South Africa and working on his new album. I am not yet sure when he is returning to eSwatini," a source was quoted as saying by KickOff, while club PRO Charles Jele also confirmed his absence.
"Yes, he has not been to training. He was not with the team when we played against Malanti. We are also playing [on Thursday] against Sisonke, and I don't think he is around. I don't know the issues," Jele said.
"But all in all, he is a wonderful person. Good attitude as a player and always committed at work. It doesn't even show that his mother is in charge of the team. We are happy with his contribution to the club so far."
Prior to joining the Eswatini club, Mpisane was last seen on the football pitch in December last year, when he played for his mother's other club, Royal AM, in the Betway Premiership.
Since then, Royal AM’s problems were documented as they were kicked out of the PSL earlier this year after a string of financial issues. After the club’s demise, Mkhize became the Mbabane Highlanders owner and later rebranded the team to Mbabane Highlanders AM to feature her son’s initials.
Mpisane’s decision to skip training for his music career is likely to raise eyebrows – and not for the first time. For a player trying to rebuild his football credibility, such absences risk reinforcing perceptions that his place in the team owes more to his family name than his professionalism. Unless he recommits to the game, his football career could once again be overshadowed by his off-field pursuits.
