Mamelodi Sundowns find themselves in an unfamiliar and uneasy position this season, though it is not yet cause for alarm. With much still to unfold, the Brazilians face a challenge unlike any they have faced in recent years.

As the Africa Cup of Nations takes centre stage, Orlando Pirates head into the month-long break in high spirits. Their slender lead at the top of the table sends a clear message of intent, and Sundowns, currently second and two points behind, will know that the resumption of domestic action presents a test they may not have fully faced before

Miguel Cardoso’s side have been inconsistent at times, and while the title race is far from over, the hiatus in league play for the next month, offers an opportunity to correct mistakes and regain momentum.

Here, Obakeng Meletse breakdown the three critical areas Sundowns must focus on in January to ensure they not only reclaim their fear factor but also mount a serious challenge to defend their crown.

Consistency and ruthlessness in results

Despite dominating South African football over the past eight seasons, Sundowns have lost some of the fear factor that once set them apart. In just 13 matches this season, they have dropped points in six games, a tally that would be considered below their usual standard.

Heading into the Christmas break without a firm grip on the title proceedings is unusual for a club of their stature. When they resume their league action against newcomers Orbit College next month, the Brazilians will need to hit the ground running.

They know all too well how ruthlessly they have punished teams that slip in the title race, and with Pirates in ominous form, they will be keen to avoid falling victim to the same fate.

The next three fixtures could define the season

The restart provides a platform to regain momentum, starting with the match against Orbit. However, the subsequent clashes against Sekhukhune United and Pirates — both direct title contenders — could be decisive.

The away clash against Pirates at Orlando Stadium, in particular, could prove pivotal for the rest of the season. Regardless of the result, the match has the potential to shift momentum and significantly impact the title race, with both sides regarded as the main contenders thanks to the quality within their squads.

Finding the balance

During their dominant years, Sundowns have expertly balanced domestic and continental competitions. This season, that challenge is even more pressing, as they chase a Pirates side with fewer commitments and a consistent run of form.

With an experienced squad that has faced tough tests over the last few seasons, there is no reason for panic — but the margin for error is minimal. Mistakes must be addressed swiftly, and focus maintained, if they are to recover their customary dominance.

With the CAF Champions League being the most sought-after title this season, a poor league run could have serious consequences. Even in their pursuit of continental glory, maintaining strong domestic form is crucial — not only to ensure consistency in Africa but also to quiet the negative chatter that has surrounded the team since the season began, as fans have expressed dissatisfaction with their performances.
