Under mounting scrutiny from sections of the Mamelodi Sundowns faithful, Miguel Cardoso has appealed for unity after his side responded with a late 2–0 victory over Sekhukhune United to move three points clear at the summit of the Betway Premiership.

The result eased some of the pressure on Cardoso and his team, as it not only widened the gap over closest challengers Orlando Pirates — who now trail them by three points with two games in hand — but also dealt a blow to Sekhukhune United’s own title ambitions.

Late strikes from Nuno Santos and Brayan Leon proved decisive, allowing the Chloorkop outfit to extend their unbeaten run to six matches. Cardoso credited the squad’s belief and tactical execution for navigating a demanding contest.

“Our victory came from the belief within the group,” Cardoso said, during his post-match press conference.

“We knew this game would be very specific in terms of the tactical approach we needed. We brought the energy to create new challenges for Sekhukhune with the changes we made, and the high intensity was enough for us to finish the match in the right way.”

The Portuguese coach has faced increasing scrutiny from supporters in recent weeks, with calls for his dismissal growing despite Sundowns’ position at the top of the league table. The calls got louder after their 2-2 Caf Champions League draw against Al Hilal this past weekend.

Cardoso showed visible emotion when his side broke the deadlock in stoppage time, reflecting the release of the pressure he has faced, particularly in recent weeks.

“It is exactly the same, and it is about telling the fans that we are always on the same side, and that what we have written on our shirts — the spirit of Ubuntu — is in our hearts,” he said of his celebration.

“I want to celebrate with them and make them understand that I am one of them, that I am here to help the club. Most of all, I want to feel excited. Today the fans were fantastic — there was positive energy and focus in the stadium.

“We just need to stay committed and together as the Masandawana family. We started the season well, and although in the previous game we did not get the points we wanted, the performance was good.”
