Orlando Pirates head into a crucial Soweto derby encounter this weekend looking to halt a worrying dip in form when they face arch-rivals Kaizer Chiefs at FNB Stadium on Saturday (3.30pm kick-off).

Following an early-season setback, head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou is once again demanding a response from his players after consecutive defeats to Mamelodi Sundowns in the league and Casric Stars in the Nedbank Cup.

With the title race still finely balanced, there is little room for further slip-ups — particularly in the biggest fixture on the domestic calendar. Several players will carry added responsibility as Pirates look to regain momentum.

Here are five players who Pirates and Ouaddou will lean on to be the difference makers in the derby.

Relebohile Mofokeng

Mofokeng has been one of Pirates’ standout performers in recent matches. Despite the defeats, the youngster showed flashes of creativity and confidence, although both Sundowns and Casric managed to limit his overall influence. Heading into the derby, much of the team’s creative burden will once again rest on his young shoulders.

Pirates often struggle to find rhythm in the final third when he is unable to unlock defences. His vision, movement and ability to create decisive moments could prove pivotal on Saturday. He will need to be at his sharpest to enhance his side’s chances of victory.

Andre de Jong

The former Stellenbosch FC forward has received a warm reception since joining the Buccaneers and could be in line for his first taste of the Soweto derby. If selected, the occasion presents the perfect platform to make a statement in Pirates colours.

Competition for places remains fierce, meaning opportunities to impress are limited. Delivering in a derby of this magnitude would not only justify his inclusion, but could also mark a defining early moment in his Pirates career.

Yanela Mbuthuma

The former Richards Bay striker has shown encouraging signs, earning Ouaddou’s trust and even starting ahead of Evidence Makgopa. However, recent matches have highlighted the need for greater clinical sharpness, with several chances missed in front of goal.

At a club where consistency is essential, Mbuthuma can draw confidence from the fact that he regularly finds himself in scoring positions. Still, he will need a clinical display this weekend, as matches of this nature are often decided by the smallest of margins.

Patrick Maswanganyi

Maswanganyi appears to be rediscovering his rhythm, having not only found form but also his scoring touch in both league and cup competition. After limited minutes before the AFCON break, he now looks sharper and increasingly confident.

Operating just behind the striker, he provides both creativity and goal threat. However, he has not always capitalised fully on the opportunities that have come his way. Should he find that cutting edge, he will be a difficult player to contain.

Tshepang Moremi

Primarily used as an impact substitute in recent outings, Moremi continues to grow within the squad. While he has yet to secure a regular starting role amid stiff competition, he consistently brings energy and directness when introduced.

He is likely to feature on Saturday, and his contribution could prove significant in stretching the game late on, creating openings and helping Pirates convert promising build-up into tangible rewards.
