Mamelodi Sundowns produced a commanding display to defeat Stade Malien 3–0 in their CAF Champions League quarter-final first leg at Loftus Versfeld on Friday, placing one foot firmly in the semi-finals.

Goals from Khuliso Mudau, Brayan León and Iqraam Rayners sealed a comfortable victory and ensured the South African champions carry a strong advantage into the return leg in Mali.

Sundowns controlled the opening half hour but initially struggled to translate their dominance into clear-cut chances. The visitors adopted a cautious approach on away soil, sitting deep and focusing on defensive organisation rather than attacking intent.

That conservative setup, combined with sustained pressure from the hosts, resulted in a succession of set pieces during the early stages as Sundowns searched for a breakthrough.

The opener finally arrived in the 35th minute through Mudau following a well-worked move down the right flank.

The attacking full-back timed his run perfectly to beat the offside trap before calmly slotting past the goalkeeper.  A brief VAR review followed, but the goal stood as Mudau netted his first in the competition in four years.

Despite Sundowns’ dominance, Stade Malien managed to limit the damage before the break, largely thanks to their goalkeeper who produced several key saves to keep the scoreline respectable at half-time.

The hosts emerged from the interval with renewed urgency and doubled their lead ten minutes into the second half.

January signing León continued his fine form by scoring his third goal of the tournament in the 55th minute. The Colombian striker expertly controlled a precise pass from Nuno Santos before poking the ball home to give Sundowns a two-goal cushion.

Substitute Rayners then added further gloss to the result in the 74th minute. The Bafana Bafana striker emphatically smashed a Santos cross into the top corner, extending his impressive run to five goals in his last four matches.

Sundowns will now shift their focus to a domestic clash against Marumo Gallants before travelling to Mali for the decisive second leg.
