Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos faces the challenge of balancing his squad selection for Friday’s pivotal World Cup qualifier against Zimbabwe at the iconic Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban.

Recent injuries have cropped up, especially in the forwards, with only two recognised strikers available, Lyle Foster from Burnley and the late inclusion, Evidence Makgopa, from Orlando Pirates. The onus will be on the wide players to rise to the occasion, take charge of creating chances, and find the back of the net.

Broos stands firm in his selection approach, emphasising that only active, high-performing players at their clubs will earn their spots, no matter their reputations. This forward line, usually dynamic and well-balanced, will have to adapt to meet the rising expectations.

There will be shake-ups in the backline after the underwhelming performance against Nigeria. Zuko Mdunyelwa and Siyabonga Ngezana are not in the squad, and the energetic Khuliso Mudau and the creative Aubrey Modiba are back in the frame.

Mudau will return as right-back, fresh off regaining his match fitness, while Modiba is likely to be selected for his attacking flair, adding dynamism down the left side.

As for the central defensive pairing, it will be the solid duo of Nkosinathi Sibisi and Mbekezeli Mbokazi, both from Pirates. They have a strong chemistry from club level, and Mbokazi is showing off his talent as a key defender more than ever.

This strategic realignment promises to tighten up the defence while unleashing a wave of creativity from the backs, precisely what is needed to face Zimbabwe head-on.

In midfield, the standout option is Teboho Mokoena. He brings invaluable depth and versatility to the squad, serving as a core player with his creative flair and sharp tactical awareness. Mokoena will play alongside Sphephelo "Yaya" Sithole, serving as the launchpad for attacks to break through the Zimbabwean backline.

Sithole makes a comeback after a lengthy injury setback, ready to pack some physicality into the contest.

The anticipated line-up is shaping up to be an exciting mix of youthful energy and seasoned experience, featuring players who have already shown their skills on both the local and international stages.

In the other midfield slots, Sipho Mbule from Pirates will likely step into the spotlight due to his fantastic form. He’ll be one of several orchestrating Bafana’s attacking plays.

On the wings, there are the dynamic talents Oswin Appollis and Mohau Nkota from Al Ettifaq, both bringing their unique flair and goal-scoring prowess. They’re sure to make waves as they look to outsmart the opposition’s defence!

Leading the charge in attack will be Foster, who’s all set to leverage his Premier League experience.

And then there is the fearless Bafana Bafana captain, Ronwen Williams. He remains the No.1 keeper, demonstrating remarkable leadership despite an inconsistent start to the season. His exceptional ability to distribute the ball will be crucial in bridging the gap between defence and attack.
