Banyana Banyana worked hard to secure a 1-0 victory over Lesotho in their women's international friendly at the UJ Soweto Campus on Saturday. A Nobahle Mdelwa spot-kick separated the two sides in the first of two friendlies, with the second set for Tuesday at the same venue.
Coming into the match, Banyana had historically dominated their opponents, with their last encounter ending in a commanding 3-0 win for South Africa in 2020.
In a battle of future stars, both teams fielded youthful squads, with South Africa focused on developing and adding options to their Women's Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) team later this year in Morocco.
Head coach Desiree Ellis was vocal about wanting a strong performance from her squad, despite many players lacking experience, and her young guns duly delivered.
Both teams exchanged attacks in the opening stages of the first half, but with limited space available, Katlego Malebane posed the most threat. She showcased her vision with attempted defense-splitting passes, but Lesotho remained compact and defended as a unit.
Once a ball girl, now an integral part of this two-legged affair and a high prospect for the future, Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Malebane nearly put Banyana ahead just six minutes in with a well-taken shot that missed the crossbar by a whisker.
The 16-year-old dictated play in midfield despite the tight spaces, as Lesotho remained disciplined in their defensive approach. Her ambitious half-volley from near the halfway line almost caught goalkeeper Nahakhanane Makibinyane off guard. Mavis Maiacane was quick to pounce on the opportunity, but agonizingly missed as the visitors cleared their lines just in time.
Banyana goalkeeper Dineo Magagula had a quiet first half but was called into action late, as Reitumetse Nahane missed the visitors' best chance of the half, sending her shot wide of the upright.
Banyana controlled proceedings, but their need to create more space and avoid relying on long-range shots became increasingly apparent as the game progressed.
At the start of the second half, Khwezi Khoza replaced the lively Maiacane. The Durban City Ladies FC forward made an immediate impact, producing the defining moment of the match. Her quick thinking allowed her to steal the ball from Nantiti Tlholoane in a dangerous area. The 15-year-old then powered into the box before being tripped inside the 18-yard area, earning Banyana a golden opportunity to take the lead.
Mdelwa stepped up and clinically converted from the spot, giving Ellis and her team a well-deserved lead in the 50th minute—ultimately securing the win for the home side.
A bigger challenge awaits in a few months as Banyana prepare to defend their WAFCON title. The tournament will be held in the same country where they made history by winning their maiden title in 2022. Wins like this will be crucial in building momentum as they aim to retain their crown.
