Kaizer Chiefs bagged a welcome victory as striker Ashley du Preez was the hero with the winning goal against Magesi FC in their Betway Premiership clash at FNB Stadium on Wednesday.
It was a match in which Chiefs were completely dominant, as they reeled off 17 shots to just the four of Magesi.
The hosts also had the lion’s share of possession with 67% of the ball.
The winning strike which came in the 69th minute though, was orchestrated by Glody Lilepo. The Congolese winger could have gone for goal himself with a run into the box, but he unselfishly crossed for du Preez who was open and blasted the ball into the back of the net.
Afterwards, Lilepo gave his thoughts on the match through a translator.
“It was a frustrating game, but in these kind of games you just need to stay focussed. At some point you will get an opportunity to score or finish,” Lilepo told SuperSport TV.
“Today we are happy because we got three points. We have already forgotten about the defeat to Mamelodi Sundowns. These three points are going to give us good confidence for Stellenbosch in the Nedbank Cup [on Saturday].”
Though Chiefs lost against table-toppers Mamelodi Sundowns 1-0 in their previous league clash over the weekend, it was deemed a good performance from the team.
Lilepo explained the different challenge presented by Magesi.
“As a professional footballer, you need to defend and attack and be good at both.
“The Mamelodi Sundowns game was very different from a tactical respect. We were defending with two strikers. Today they gave me the freedom to play in the wide areas. Today we created a lot of 1 v 1s.”
