'Not a one-hit wonder': Brandon Petersen rallies Kaizer Chiefs for Nedbank Cup defence

Kaizer Chiefs captain Brandon Petersen has welcomed another high-stakes meeting with Stellenbosch FC, insisting the Glamour Boys are fully focused on defending their title following Thursday’s Nedbank Cup Last 32 draw.

Amakhosi were paired with Stellies in the standout fixture of the round, renewing a cup rivalry that has become a recurring theme in recent seasons. For Petersen, the draw reinforces the shift in mindset at Naturena after Chiefs finally ended their decade-long trophy drought by lifting the Nedbank Cup last season.

"Going into the cup last season was for us to try to end the drought, and now that we’ve ended it, our mindset is to defend it and ensure we bring the trophy back home," Petersen said. "For us, it’s important to represent ourselves well and show we’re not a one-hit wonder."

Chiefs’ route to their 2025 triumph included a 3-1 quarter-final victory over Stellenbosch — a result that played a pivotal role in their march to the final, where they defeated Orlando Pirates 2-1 at Moses Mabhida Stadium.

However, Stellenbosch will draw confidence from their most recent knockout encounter. The teams met in October 2025 in the Carling Knockout Cup round of 16, where Stellies edged Chiefs 5-4 on penalties after a goalless draw.

"For me, I know the players are looking forward to showing that they want to win the Nedbank Cup and defend our title," Petersen said. "I think Stellenbosch again—my third time drawing them in a cup competition — it’s always an exciting fixture. One that always draws a crowd, especially in Cape Town. We are always looking forward to playing against them because it’s guaranteed entertaining football."

With the season entering its second half, cup competitions take on added significance for Nasreddine Nabi’s side, offering a parallel path to silverware as they continue to pursue consistency in the Betway Premiership.

For the Chiefs skipper, the message is clear: Amakhosi are no longer chasing redemption. They are now defending an identity and standards built on last season's success, determined to prove that their return to the podium was the start of a sustainable new era.
