Lehlohonolo Mojela scored a brace, finding the net in each half, to help Sekhukhune United to a consummately easy 2-0 victory over Orbit College at the Peter Mokaba Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

The victory sees Ba Bina Noko remain in the hunt for the league championship. They now trail leaders Orlando Pirates by six points, although Eric Tinkler’s team have played two matches more than the Buccaneers.

Sekhukhune were quick off the mark, hardly allowing the visiting rookies time to find their feet. Mojela scored as early as the third minute; the striker, with a penchant for dyeing his hair peroxide, profited from an assist by Vusimusi Mncube. Orbit had lost possession via a stray pass that found an opposition player and were duly punished.

Such a flying start against inferior opposition gave rise to hopes of a goal avalanche. However, dominant as they were, Sekhukhune struggled to translate their superiority into further goals. With such a precarious lead, Tinkler’s men were always in danger of being pegged back.

Yanga Madiba almost equalised but watched in disbelief as his shot went centimetres wide of the far post. At the other end, Thabang Monare shot wide off the bottom of the post as the game see-sawed. It could have been all square by the break, but Orbit’s Mbulelo Wagaba shot over from inside the box when finding the target appeared much easier.

Sekhukhune eventually put some daylight between themselves and the opposition shortly after the hour mark when Mojela completed his brace. The striker beat an ill-conceived offside trap by the North West outfit and easily rounded goalkeeper Cyril Chibwe to make it 2-0.

The former TS Galaxy and Stellenbosch FC player could have had a hat-trick late in the match when a teammate located him with a long ball, but Mojela failed to read the flight properly and the chance went begging.

Not that Tinkler was complaining; his men secured the maximum points, moving them above Kaizer Chiefs into third place.

The victory will be a significant confidence booster ahead of their Nedbank Cup clash away to the tricky University of Pretoria at the weekend.
