Kaizer Chiefs defender Thabiso Monyane has reacted to his failed acrobatic attempt against Stellenbosch in the Nedbank Cup last 32, saying it was a learning curve for him and that he will certainly get it right in the future.
Chiefs lost 2-1 to Stellies at the DHL Stadium in the Ke Yona Cup, resulting in their failure to defend their crown. While the result hurt the team and their supporters, some disgruntled fans lamented Monyane’s failed bicycle kick attempt late in the match, insisting that had he kept things simpler, he could have scored or created the equaliser.
The backlash went viral on social media, with naysayers claiming, “that’s one of the reasons why arch-rivals Orlando Pirates didn’t renew his contract at the end of last season.”
With Chiefs set to face Stellies in the Betway Premiership at FNB Stadium on Tuesday night (7.30pm), following the Nedbank Cup heartbreak that included the failed bicycle attempt, Monyane revealed what he made of the outside noise and where his confidence currently lies.
“It’s football, it happens. If it went in, it was going to be a great thing,” Monyane said.
“A wise person once said, if you are going to try, you must fail big because you know that you are going to accomplish. So, it was a learning curve.”
A former striker in his heyday before being converted into a right-back, Monyane said he will eventually hit the target as he continues to channel his poacher’s instinct.

“For sure, I am capable (of scoring such goals). In fact, more than capable. So, don’t be shocked when it goes in next time.”
With Chiefs set to face Pirates in the Soweto derby after the clash with Stellies, Amakhosi fans would love nothing more than a successful acrobatic attempt from Monyane against his former club to make up for lost time.
