Mamelodi Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso has issued a heartfelt plea for support ahead of his team’s critical Betway Premiership clash against Sekhukhune United this Sunday at Loftus Versfeld.

Following a tumultuous week, during which his players faced jeers from the home crowd as they warmed up for their previous match against AmaZulu, Cardoso believes that fan support is pivotal to the team’s performance and morale.

The upcoming fixture is not just another game; it has significant implications for the league standings. As Sundowns seek to maintain their position at the top of the table, second-placed Orlando Pirates could potentially topple them should they win in Saturday’s Soweto Derby.

However, Cardoso remains unfocused on the outcome of that match, emphasising that Sunday’s game against Sekhukhune is his sole priority.

“On the day before the (derby) match, I will have so many things to do. I will not be really looking at that (derby) match,” Cardoso explained. “The most important thing for us is that on Sunday we will play Sekhukhune. That is the focus.”

In addressing the recent negative reactions from some sections of the fanbase, Cardoso expressed disappointment at seeing his players booed. “I didn’t like to see the players of Sundowns booed in the warm-up. These players work hard, and they deserve better,” he said, urging the Masandawana family to stand united.

“It’s important that people are supportive in all the moments,” he added, stressing the need for togetherness and respect from the supporters.

Moreover, Cardoso dispelled claims of favouritism, asserting that his loyalty lies solely with the team’s success. “The coach of Sundowns has no sons in the team. There are moments for some players, and moments for others, and that’s what we do. Believe me, what I want is the best for Mamelodi Sundowns,” he affirmed, reinforcing that every player is valued equally regardless of their background.

As Sundowns gear up for this significant encounter, Cardoso’s call to fans resonates with the essence of football: unity, support, and commitment. “If the family of supporters, together with the players, understand the way we are doing things, we can achieve good things, but we need to commit with everybody together,” Cardoso concluded.

This Sunday will not just be a game; it will be a test of resilience, camaraderie, and the unwavering support of the Mamelodi Sundowns community.
