Orlando Pirates may not be in action on Tuesday evening, but few clubs in South African football will monitor the meeting between Mamelodi Sundowns and TS Galaxy more anxiously than the Buccaneers.

With the Betway Premiership title race entering its decisive phase, every remaining fixture has suddenly become loaded with consequence. Pirates head into the final stretch of the campaign still believing they can dethrone Sundowns despite sitting second on the table.

The Soweto giants remain three points behind the defending champions but still possess what could become the defining advantage in the race — a game in hand. That reality means Tuesday night’s clash in Mbombela could dramatically reshape the complexion of the title battle before Pirates even kick another ball.

Should Sundowns fail to defeat Galaxy, Pirates would immediately edge closer of the promise medals heading into their final two matches against Durban City FC and Orbit College. Even if the Brazilians secure victory, Pirates will still take encouragement from one increasingly important factor — goal difference.

Despite Sundowns’ chaotic 7-4 demolition of Siwelele FC on Saturday, the Buccaneers still maintain a superior goal difference advantage that could become decisive if the two sides finish level on points.

That possibility has added another layer of tension to the title race.

There is also growing belief around Pirates following their recent momentum. While Sundowns have dropped points in recent weeks against sides such as Kaizer Chiefs, Richards Bay and Siwelele, Pirates have steadily remained within touching distance despite earlier inconsistencies of their own.

Coach Abdeslam Ouaddou has repeatedly emphasised mentality, resilience and emotional control during the closing weeks of the campaign, and his side now appear to be responding.

Still, danger remains everywhere.

Pirates’ final fixtures may appear favourable on paper, but matches against Durban City and Orbit College are unlikely to be straightforward. Both sides possess the ability to turn games into physical and emotionally draining contests, particularly against a Pirates side carrying the enormous pressure of knowing that any dropped point could instantly end their championship ambitions.

That has already proven problematic for the Buccaneers this season.

Pirates have occasionally struggled whenever opponents disrupted rhythm, slowed matches down and forced aggressive physical battles, something highlighted in frustrating results against Richards Bay, Siwelele and even during the Soweto Derby against Kaizer Chiefs.

There is also the emotional aspect beginning to build around the club.

For the first time in years, Pirates supporters genuinely sense vulnerability from Sundowns late in a title race. That has created growing belief, but also growing expectation.

For now though, attention in Orlando temporarily shifts away from their own fixtures and firmly toward Mbombela. Because what happens between Sundowns and Galaxy on Tuesday evening could shape the entire direction of the Betway Premiership title race.
