Durban - No arrest have been made following the killing of a KwaDukuza traffic officer. Superintendent Eddie Boaventura was gunned down while attempting to apprehend criminals who had robbed a Vodacom shop on Friday.
Boaventura, who had been in the service for over 40 years, was on duty when he was shot multiple times by a suspect who he had tried to apprehend for speeding along the N2. A case of murder has been opened.
Provincial police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Nqobile Gwala confirmed that a traffic officer had been shot several times on the N2. Sipho Mkhize, spokesperson at the KwaDukuza Municipality, said they had learned yesterday morning that Boaventura had died from his injuries.
Earlier, Mkhize had said that preliminary investigations indicated that the vehicle was a getaway car used by suspected robbers of the Vodacom shop in KwaDukuza Mall.
“It is with great sadness that we confirm the passing of Superintendent Boaventura this morning (Saturday). Boaventura died while in the line of duty, and the city, together with the leadership, will visit the bereaved family to convey our condolences.” The KwaDukuza Mall management has since conveyed their condolences to the Boaventura family.
In a Facebook page, KwaDukuza Mall CEO Vivian Reddy and his management said: “It is with great sadness that we received the news of the passing on of Superintendent Eddie Boaventura, Our deepest condolences go out to the family and colleagues of Superintendent Boaventura.
We salute him as a courageous hero who passed away in the line of duty.” Boaventura leaves behind his wife, a son, a daughter, a-five-month-old granddaughter, his two brothers, his 85-year-old mother, four nieces and a nephew.
