THE Silverglen Community Forum held a meeting on Saturday to discuss ways to prevent crime in the area following an home invasion, in which a man was killed.
Justin Isaiah, 40, was awakened by his nephew's screams after seeing armed intruders in their Silverglen home in the early hours of Thursday morning.
Isaiah, a father of one, was shot in the chest and his father, John Isaiah, 60, sustained a gunshot wound to his abdomen.
A relative, Linique Nathaniel, said the family were very traumatised and in shock.
"At about 3am Justin's 18-year-old nephew who was awake saw a flashlight in the passage and screamed when he saw the two gunmen. His screams had awakened his uncle and grandparents. The men stole the TV and jewellery.
"A neighbour heard the scream and informed the security company. While the grandson tried to help his grandfather stop the bleeding they did not know Justin had been shot. It is suspected that Justin came out of the room and was shot. He then went back into his room and locked the door. It was only after Justin's room door was forced open they discovered he was also shot, but had passed away," she said.
Nathaniel said the gunmen had removed the driveway gate off its track, broke the padlock on the gate, and removed the rubber and glass from the aluminium door to gain entry into the house.
"The family cannot believe something like this happened. This was the first time that they had a robbery at their house. Justin was loved by everyone. He brought such energy to a room," said Nathaniel.
She said funeral arrangements were still to be finalised.
Claude Subramodey, the spokesperson for Amawele Emergency Services, said John had bled profusely.
"It was difficult to see the family in such an emotional state especially having just lost a loved one in such traumatic circumstances," said Subramodey.
The Silverglen Community Police Forum called an emergency meeting yesterday at SCDIFA Hall in Chatsworth to share ideas, progress and discuss security matters due to a recent spike in crime in the area.
Police spokesperson, Colonel Robert Netshiunda, said police in Bayview were investigating cases of house robbery, murder and attempted murder.
"It is reported that in the early hours of the morning the family was sleeping when they heard the bedroom door open and were awakened by two armed men wearing masks. The suspects reportedly assaulted and robbed the two victims of their cellphones, jewellery and other electronic appliances before moving them to a separate room where they shot them," he said.
