A CRIME intelligence-driven operation in Umlazi has led to the recovery of signal jammers, unlicensed firearms and ammunition, following a tip-off about a suspected hijacker.

According to KZN police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Paul Magwaza, members of the eThekwini District Crime Intelligence Outer South Office, assisted by the Durban Metropolitan Police and Tracing Point TRU, on Wednesday, November 26, acted on crucial information that a suspect in the Emahlweni informal settlement was in possession of unlicensed firearms and linked to hijacking activities.

"The eThekwini District Crime Intelligence Outer South Office received crucial information on a possible hijacking suspect. The information further revealed that the suspect was also in possession of unlicensed firearms." says Magwaza

He revealed that when officers arrived at the house, they found the door wide open but no one inside. Four signal jammers, which were being charged, immediately caught their attention. A further search uncovered two unlicensed pistols with nine rounds of ammunition and a homemade revolver.

Police confirmed that one of the pistols had a serial number which, when checked, revealed it had been stolen during a hijacking incident in Umlazi in October.

The firearms and signal jammers were seized, and investigations are continuing to locate the suspect, whose identity is known to police.
