THE South African National Defence Union extended it condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of the SANDF member who tragically lost his life on Christmas Day during operations at the Macadamia military base in Mpumalanga.

The incident occurred while the soldiers were on patrol duties as part of Operation Corona, a crucial mission aimed at safeguarding South Africa's borders.

According to a statement from the SANDF, the unfortunate events unfolded when a military vehicle carrying members of the South African Defence Force Military Police attempted to navigate a river swollen with floodwaters following heavy rains.

In a devastating turn of events, two soldiers were swept away by the strong current during the attempt to cross.

As the search efforts continue, the body of one of the missing members has been recovered, while the second soldier remains unaccounted for.

The South African Police Service (SAPS) Diving Rescue Team is leading an extensive search operation, with support from an SANDF Oryx helicopter, in hopes of finding the remaining soldier.

The Minister of Defence and Military Veterans, Angie Motshekga, her deputies, as well as secretary of defence and chief of the SANDF conveyed their condolences.

The SANDF Union in a statement said as rescue efforts to find one other missing member continue, it is important to note that in line with standard procedure, a Board of Inquiry will follow to determine the cause and circumstances that led to this tragedy.

"This process is essential to ensure that lessons are learned, and that soldier safety remains paramount."
