HONOR launched its new Magic 8 series in China on October 15, featuring the Magic 8 and Magic 8 Pro, alongside new wearables. These devices run on Magic OS 10, based on Android 16, with a strong focus on AI capabilities and cross-device connectivity.

South African consumers, however, will have to wait longer for the Magic 8 series.

Mark Lei, marketing director of HONOR SA Technologies, explained that the delay is due to the need to adapt the software for different international markets, specifically preparing the Google Gemini-powered international version, which differs from the Chinese version's internal AI.

Lei stated: "We are unable to build a channel vision and overseer version simultaneously due to a shortage of human resources, because the software is very different. What distinguishes us from our rivals is the HONOR business model, which involves planning two years ahead of time.

"Due to difficulties, you have to start with the Chinese market first because there are few R&D engineers available. I work with individuals two years in advance. They focus all of their efforts on the Chinese market, and once it's nearly finished, they usually turn to the international market to get the program ready. Therefore, it often takes four to six months."

In other news, HONOR SA Technologies CEO, Fred Zhou, will announce the launch of the HONOR X7D next week.

In July, HONOR launched the Magic V5 in South Africa. This foldable phone is designed with South African users in mind, offering a slim 6.43mm unfolded profile, a reinforced titanium hinge, up to a 5,820mAh battery, and dual nano-SIM support.

HONOR MagicV5 boasts at the thinnest foldable device at just 6.43mm thin when unfolded.

Zhou emphasised at the launch: “A phone should adapt to your life, not the other way around… That’s the philosophy behind every part of the Magic V5. It’s premium but also practical. Smart but real.”

The Magic V5 features smarter software, power-saving modes optimised for load shedding, and a durable screen designed for everyday use.

Next month, HONOR will showcase its products and wearables, including the X7D and Magic V5 devices, at the Africa Tech Festival in Cape Town.
