Joburg’s East Rand has a fresh reason to celebrate with the opening of its very first Starbucks, located in the bustling Harvest Place Shopping Centre in Kempton Park. This vibrant new store is poised to become a favourite meeting spot for commuters, workers, and coffee enthusiasts alike, according to Leah McCrae, Managing Director of Rand Capital Coffee, the Starbucks Licensee in South Africa.
“Around the country, we’re proud to welcome people to our Third Place philosophy,” McCrae said, emphasising that the new Starbucks aims to create not just a café, but a community hub where guests can indulge in moments of connection and creativity. “This beautiful store is no different.”
The café promises to be a haven for locals and visitors, offering not only expertly crafted beverages made from premium coffee but also a tranquil environment designed for comfort.
“We love our location in a bustling retail hub on the way to OR Tambo International Airport. It’s the perfect stop-off point for everyone, from young professionals to families and casual shoppers," McCrae said.
The design of the store itself plays a crucial role in the experience. Guests can expect soaring double-volume ceilings that flood the space with natural light, complemented by sculptural pendant lighting that sets an elegant and modern tone. “You’re welcome to grab a seat at our comfy bistro seats or, if you’re meeting someone for a work conversation or a catch-up, why not settle in one of our private booths?” McCrae said.
A shared community table encourages collaboration and conversation, while an outdoor working space allows those who thrive in fresh air to enjoy their beverage in a more relaxed setting. “This is a space that invites you to linger a little longer, to share a moment, to relax and connect,” McCrae explained, revealing that the design has been inspired by international coffee houses. The aim is to create a modern yet warm atmosphere that resonates with local clientele while maintaining a cosmopolitan edge.
With the opening of this East Rand Starbucks, McCrae emphasised that the milestone goes beyond mere expansion. “It’s about allowing more people to get to know the Starbucks experience; an experience that lets you know that you’re part of something special and meaningful,” she said.
