Political fixer, Brown Mogotsi will spend at least another week behind bars after the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court postponed his bail proceedings over an alleged assassination attempt.
Mogotsi, who appeared briefly in court on Monday after spending the weekend in police custody, faces five charges, including perjury and defeating the ends of justice.
Prosecutors allege the controversial political operator orchestrated his own shooting scare in November last year — a dramatic incident that initially sparked shock and speculation.
At the time, Mogotsi claimed he narrowly escaped death when a barrage of bullets struck his vehicle.
The incident painted the picture of a man under siege.
But investigators now believe the attack may have been staged, triggering a criminal probe that culminated in his arrest.
Tension briefly rose in court when the state revealed that the address provided by Mogotsi earlier on Monday was incomplete and still required verification before bail arguments could proceed.
“The address that is to be verified is outside the province. Certain logistics are required for the police officers to move from one province to another,” the prosecutor told the court.
Defence lawyer Makau Sekgatja pushed for a quicker postponement to Thursday, arguing there was no reason for extended detention.
The court, however, rejected the request and postponed the matter to May 25.
For now, the man once linked to backroom political influence remains locked behind bars as the assassination case deepens.
