SAPS has confirmed that the official vehicle of Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi was involved in a fatal crash on the N1 near Bela-Bela, Limpopo, in which a mother and her baby were killed.

In a statement, SAPS said the incident occurred on Saturday, 09 May 2026, while the state vehicle was being driven by a member of the Protection Security Services (PSS).

A preliminary investigation suggests the woman was attempting to cross the road with her children after an earlier incident in which her husband was allegedly struck and killed by a vehicle driven by an off-duty police officer.

Police said the woman and her baby were struck by the minister’s official vehicle while crossing the road. “Tragically, the mother and baby succumbed to their injuries,” SAPS said.

Authorities confirmed that Motsoaledi, his close protection officer and the driver immediately stopped at the scene and remained until emergency services arrived. Statements were later obtained from all those present.

Two separate culpable homicide cases are now under investigation. The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) has taken over the matter as both drivers involved are SAPS members.

SAPS extended its condolences, saying it offers its “deepest condolences to the bereaved family during this difficult time.”
